Celebrate the legacy of Ruth Beckford, the "Mother of Black Dance" in the Bay Area. This experience blends oral tradition with movement. Participants will hear the Caribbean folktale Mother of Waters while learning specific choreography and gestures that embody Beckford’s Afro-Haitian modern dance style. It is a celebration of the body as a vessel for history and healing. The Master Link: A Collaborative History Quest (Oakland, CA) Best for: Team-building, schools, and aspiring changemakers. The Challenge: It’s 1942. The Kaiser Shipyards are booming, but the gates are closed to many. Do you have what it takes to break through? The Experience: Part historical simulation, part escape room, this immersive session puts participants in the shoes of legendary welder and organizer Frances Albrier. To succeed, your group must navigate a series of high-stakes "assembly line" puzzles and collaborative tasks that mirror the real-world barriers Albrier faced. It’s a race against time that requires strategy, teamwork, and the spirit of Oakland labor. This isn't just a history lesson—it’s an exercise in collective power and social engineering.
